The class is still working on the novel study.
As Christmas break approaches ALL STUDENTS MUST BE READING THEIR NOVEL AT HOME! There is going to be limited time going forward to read in class. The deadline for the novel study will be December 21 so I have lots of reading to do over the Christmas holidays. The class has been divided up into groups for a literature circle.
Each group is reading a designated novel and each group member has a specific role within the group. Every two chapters the roles change so everyone should do each role more than once (depending on how many chapters).
All the roles are on the attached image at the bottom of this post.
The paragraphs for Harrison Bergeron are due on Tuesday, November 7!
Don't forget to HAVE YOUR WORK EDITED!!! I will not accept work that has not been peer edited by at least two people. We read, in class, the classic Kurt Vonnegut short story, Harrison Bergeron. The main theme within the story is equality... in this case legislated equality. Everyone is brought DOWN to the lowest level to attain complete equality. Below are both the story and the assignments.
... since my last update! In LA we have been working on writing paragraphs and then having them peer edited. Unfortunately not as many people are taking advantage of class time to do the work. That means they are doing the writing at the last minute and then it doesn't get edited. The students were given a handout on Tips and Hints to help them further edit their work. It's attached below. We will be starting a short story, Harrison Bergeron, in the next day or so meaning students will have time to write and edit what will turn into a five paragraph essay.
Since I've figured out blog posting here are the old posts from the webpage. 2 October 2017 Sentences from The Sniper short story are due TUESDAY, October 3! The first of 4 novel tracking sheets is due October 4 and the final three are due on October 10. 28 September 2017 Novel MUST be finished by Monday! Novel tracking sheet #1 is also due Wednesday. #'s 2-4 due shortly thereafter. We are moving onto new and exciting things!! 26 September 2017 Yesterday we went back a bit... after seeing some writing samples it was decided that we should do some review from previous years as a refresher on what the expectations are for Language Arts going forward. This will help prepare students for high school next year. Attached are the helpful handouts in case they get lost. The first handout is on grammar basics. It's a checklist for editing purposes, It had information on capitalization, punctuation, common mistakes and more. This document is to be used ALL YEAR LONG! When in doubt look here first! The second handout is on sentence structure. There are three types of sentences. Simple, compound and complex. This handout explains what they are and how to properly write them. Again, when in doubt, look here. Lastly, the Sniper sentence assignment. Take the words from the story you didn't know or wanted to work with and then you will write a simple, compound and complex sentence using those words. ALL WORK WILL BE PEER EDITED USING THE FIRST TWO ATTACHMENTS SO GET TO KNOW THEM WELL!
